Private tour Madeira price: what €300 to €560 per group buys
Private tour Madeira price, explained: our six tours cost €300 to €560 per group, so €75 to €140 per person for four. What the price covers and why it is above a €100 to €200 guide.
A private tour in Madeira with Funchal Tours costs €300 to €560 per group, not per person. Split across a full car of four, that is €75 to €140 each. The price covers a licensed guide, a licensed and insured Toyota C-HR, hotel pick-up in the Funchal area and permit handling. Here is the math, tour by tour, and what separates this from a €100 to €200 guide.
Private tour Madeira price: all six tours
Every price below is for your whole group, up to 4 passengers. Nothing is added per head. The per-person figures are simply the group price divided by the number of people in the car.
| Tour | Length | Per group | 2 people | 3 people | 4 people |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Funchal City & Culture | 3 hrs | €300 | €150 | €100 | €75 |
| Levada Walk | 4 hrs | €340 | €170 | about €113 | €85 |
| East Coast Highlights | half day | €380 | €190 | about €127 | €95 |
| Wine, Food & Villages | half day | €420 | €210 | €140 | €105 |
| Mountain Interior | full day | €480 | €240 | €160 | €120 |
| Full Island Discovery | full day | €560 | €280 | about €187 | €140 |
The Levada Walk and Mountain Interior pages show the same split at four people: €85 and €120 per person. The numbers are the same on the tour pages, on /book and here.
Per group versus per person: how to read it
Bus tours quote per person, usually €20 to €50, and put 15 to 30 strangers on one coach. A private tour flips that. You pay for the guide and the car for the day, and the number of people changes only what each person owes.
Take Mountain Interior at €480. Four people: €480 ÷ 4 = €120 each. A couple: €240 each. The couple pays double per head for the same day, the same route, the same long lunch stop. So if you can fill the car, the per-person price drops fast. If you are two, the half-day tours are the sensible choice.
Short on time or budget? Funchal City & Culture is 3 hours at €300. Four people pay €75 each.
Why €100 to €200 guides cost less
You will find local guides advertising €100 to €200 for a group. I won't pretend they don't exist. The gap is real, and it comes from what sits behind the price. Ask any guide these questions before you pay:
- Is the guide registered? I operate under RNAAT n.º 970/2024, the number shown in the footer of every page.
- What are you riding in? Our Toyota C-HR is a licensed, insured, air-conditioned tour vehicle, not a private car used on the side.
- Is there professional insurance? Ours is in place for every tour.
- Who handles levada permits? Some of the best levada walks need a permit. A guide who has not arranged one cannot take you on them. I handle it.
- How many people are in the car? Ours is capped at 4. Group size is part of what you are buying.
A cheaper guide can be a good person. But a low price usually means one of those five items is missing, and you only find out on the day.
Why we are not cheaper on a marketplace
Viator and GetYourGuide take 20 to 30% commission from the operator. That cost lands in the price you see, or comes out of the guide's pay and the quality of the day. We do not list on them. You book direct, and the price you pay goes to the tour. I wrote about this in more detail in the post on booking direct instead of Viator or GetYourGuide, which is on the blog.
Direct also means one point of contact. You message me by email or WhatsApp, and I answer within 24 hours. No call centre in between.
What the price does not include
Honesty matters more than a tidy table. The group price covers the guide, the vehicle, fuel and pick-up from hotels in the Funchal area. Meals, tastings and any entry fees you choose to pay for on the day are yours. On the Wine, Food & Villages and Mountain Interior days, lunch is part of the plan, so budget for it.
How booking and payment work
A €100 deposit holds your date on /book. The balance is paid directly to your guide on the day of the tour. For a €340 Levada Walk, that means €100 now and €240 on the day.
Cancellation terms are published in the terms and conditions: full refund if you cancel at least 7 days before, 50% from 72 hours to 7 days before, no refund under 48 hours. One reschedule is allowed per booking.
Pick the right tour for your budget
- Tightest budget, first day on the island: Funchal City & Culture, €300.
- Want to walk: Levada Walk, €340, four hours through Laurisilva forest.
- Want the real coast and villages: East Coast Highlights, €380, or Wine, Food & Villages, €420.
- A full day, no rush: Mountain Interior, €480, or Full Island Discovery, €560.
Have a group bigger than four, or a route in mind that is not on the list? Write to me and I will tell you what is possible. Otherwise, pick your date and tour, and book your private tour with the €100 deposit.
