Tour guide
Which tour is right for you?
Six private tours, one guide, up to 4 passengers. All prices are per group. Here is what each one actually involves, and how to choose.
Pick by situation
Start here if you're not sure.
First time in Madeira
Start with Funchal City & Culture to get your bearings, then add Full Island Discovery if you have a full day to spare. Both give you the context to understand what you're looking at.
You came to walk
The Levada Walk is the one. It accesses sections that casual hikers can't reach without a licensed guide. Mountain Interior adds altitude and big views if you want a full-day option.
Food and wine are the point
Wine, Food & Villages is built for this: a private winery visit and a proper sit-down lunch at a local place. East Coast Highlights adds coastal scenery to the mix if you want a second day.
Half day or less
Funchal City & Culture runs three hours and works as a morning or afternoon. East Coast Highlights fits a half day. Both leave the rest of the day free.
Full day, want to cover ground
Full Island Discovery covers the most ground in one day. Mountain Interior is better if you want to stay in the high country rather than circle the whole island.
All six tours
What each one involves.
Funchal City & Culture
The island's capital on foot, with someone who grew up here.
Three hours in Funchal: the old town, the market, the cable car viewpoints, the botanical garden neighbourhood. Mostly flat walking on city streets. Good for anyone who wants context before heading into the mountains, or for a group that prefers culture over countryside.
Flat city walking, no trails
Levada Walk
Madeira's UNESCO-listed irrigation channels, deep in the laurel forest.
Four hours on a real levada trail through Laurisilva forest to a waterfall. Not the managed tourist paths. A licensed guide is required to access certain sections, and this is why: fewer people, better scenery, and the kind of quiet that justifies the flight. Bring walking shoes with grip.
Trail walking on levada paths, uneven terrain
East Coast Highlights
Cliffs, fishing villages and volcanic scenery along the quieter coast.
The east coast is less visited and more dramatic: sea cliffs, old fishing villages, Ponta de São Lourenço. A half-day drive with stops, short walks at the key viewpoints, time at a local café. A good complement to Funchal city time, or a standalone half-day.
Scenic drive with short walks at viewpoints
Wine, Food & Villages
Madeiran wine, espetada, poncha and the villages behind the postcard.
A half day organised around eating and drinking well. A private winery visit (not a tourist estate), a traditional espetada lunch, a village where nothing is translated. The guide knows the owner of the winery; you're a guest, not a tour group. Good for couples and anyone who thinks of a holiday in terms of meals.
Scenic drive, tastings, village walks
Mountain Interior
The volcanic spine of the island: peaks, fog, and viewpoints that take effort to reach.
A full day in the island's interior: mountain passes, Paul da Serra plateau, Pico do Arieiro if conditions allow. Some walks at altitude, cooler temperatures. This is the version of Madeira most visitors never see. Best for groups who came for the landscape, not just the coastline.
Mountain roads, moderate walking at altitude
Full Island Discovery
Coast to mountains to villages: the whole island in one long day.
The full circuit: north coast road, mountain interior, wine country, east coast, back to Funchal. A long day with a lot of ground covered. Works well for first-time visitors who want the whole picture, or repeat visitors fitting Madeira into a short window. No single place gets deep time, but nothing important is missed.
Long day in the vehicle with scenic stops
