Private tour Madeira: how to choose your first guided day
First time in Madeira and weighing a private tour? Match the tour length to your energy and trip length, see what private costs against a bus tour, and learn why car size and a licensed local guide matter.
If this is your first trip to Madeira, pick a private tour by length first. Three hours covers Funchal, four hours is one levada walk, a half day takes you to the east coast or into wine country, and a full day crosses the island. Our private tours cost €300 to €560 per group of up to four, against €20 to €50 a head on a bus.
Start with the time you have, not the sights
Most first-timers open a list of 30 viewpoints and freeze. Flip it around. Decide how many hours you want in a car and on your feet, then choose the tour that fits. Madeira is small, but the roads climb and twist, so distances on the map lie. A 30 km drive can take an hour.
Here is how our six private tours sort by length.
| Length | Tour | Per group (up to 4) |
|---|---|---|
| 3 hrs | Funchal City & Culture | €300 |
| 4 hrs | Levada Walk | €340 |
| Half day | East Coast Highlights | €380 |
| Half day | Wine, Food & Villages | €420 |
| Full day | Mountain Interior | €480 |
| Full day | Full Island Discovery | €560 |
The 3-hour tour: Funchal on your first morning
Funchal City & Culture is the one I suggest for arrival day or the first morning. You get the old town, the markets and the way the city climbs the hillside, with someone who can tell you which restaurants locals actually use. It also settles your bearings, so the rest of your week feels easier.
It is the shortest and cheapest of the six at €300. It suits jet-lagged travelers, anyone with a late flight out, or a stop between a cruise and lunch.
The 4-hour tour: one levada walk
The Levada Walk is four hours through Laurisilva forest along one of Madeira's old irrigation channels. The paths are mostly flat, so it is the distance and the uneven footing that tire you, not the climbing.
Why take a guide? Some of the best levada walks need an advance permit, and I arrange it. I also pick the trail to match your group's fitness and the weather that day. If you want the full rundown first, read what nobody tells you about levada walks.
The half day: coast or cellars
You have two choices, and they feel different.
East Coast Highlights (€380) is for people who want landscape. You drive the island's wilder side, with time to stop where the view earns it.
Wine, Food & Villages (€420) is for people who want to eat and meet people. It runs through villages and local producers, and lunch is part of the plan, so budget for it on top.
Pick the coast if you take a lot of photos. Pick the villages if your best travel memories involve a table.
The full day: mountains or the whole island
Mountain Interior (€480) goes up into the high country, where cloud can roll in and out within an hour. Bring layers even in summer.
Full Island Discovery (€560) is the long one. It makes sense if you only have one day to give to a guide, or if you want to cover several parts of the island without driving yourself on mountain roads.
Not sure between the two? Ask me. The honest answer depends on the weather forecast and how much time you want to spend in the car.
Private tour versus bus tour: the real cost
A bus tour is cheap per person. Market rates run about €20 to €50 each, with 15 to 30 strangers on one coach and a fixed route. A private tour is priced per group, so what you pay per head depends on who fills the car.
- Four people on Mountain Interior: €480 ÷ 4 = €120 each.
- Four people on Funchal City & Culture: €300 ÷ 4 = €75 each.
- A couple on the Levada Walk: €340 ÷ 2 = €170 each.
So a private day costs roughly two to four times a bus seat. What you get for that is your own pace, a route you can change on the day, and no waiting for strangers to come back to the coach. For the full tour-by-tour math, see the private tour Madeira price breakdown. If a couple wants private but not the full price, the 3-hour and 4-hour tours are the sensible start.
Why group size matters
Our tours take a maximum of four passengers, one car, one guide. That cap does real work. Everyone sees the viewpoint, everyone hears the story, and when someone wants to stay an extra twenty minutes at a waterfall, you stay.
Traveling with more than four? Write to me before you book. Extended families and milestone trips are something I plan for, and I will tell you what is possible.
Why a licensed local guide matters
Cheaper guides exist, and some are good people. But ask what sits behind the price. My operation is registered under RNAAT n.º 970/2024, the number in the footer of every page. The Toyota C-HR is a licensed, insured tour vehicle, and professional insurance covers every tour. I have lived on the island for years, and the levada permits, the winery visits and the lunch spots come from those years.
A guide who lives there also changes the day when the weather changes. Cloud on the north coast often means sun in the south, and a local knows which way to drive.
How to choose in three steps
- Count your days. One day with a guide: Full Island Discovery. Two: add Funchal City & Culture or a levada walk.
- Name your must-do. Walking, wine, coast or mountains. Pick the tour built around it.
- Divide by your group. Take the group price and divide by the people in your car. That is your real per-person number.
Ready to hold a date?
A €100 deposit secures your tour, and the balance goes to your guide on the day. Pick your tour, date and party size on /book, or send me a question first if your plans do not fit neatly into one of the six.
